[...] Believe it or not, the best way to avoid snotty former employees is by avoiding them from the beginning. The best place to fix people’s problems is at the front door. Make sure your hiring processes are tuned up and that you are using best practices, including solid assessments and situational interviews to uncover the best information about how the employment relationship will work out.
Well, yes. It is work. But compare it to the work it takes to juggle all the distractions AND get after the work you pursue in that "zen environment!!" If the comparison leaves you wanting something different, that gives you a chance to learn even more about managing your space. Good luck!

I think some multitasking results from a ubiquitous environment of noise (both visual and aural). I recall a suggestion to clear the visual space in front of me - 180 degrees - so that I wouldn't be distracted when working on my computer (writing learning materials, composing insightful blogs, reading a tome, etc.) I've adapted the idea as I find I need to upgrade my defensive space quite often as new intrusions work around my cone of focus! So, I have in my toolkit a surefire method to dispel all distractions: I go to the biomed library at UCSD, find a study cube in a corner and put in earplugs. After a few minute the sound of my own breathing becomes soothing and almost hypnotic, effectively creating the zen environment I seek. Holy cow, tho, how much work is that!
